We faced the same situation on our last trip and were struggling to keep the little ones entertained until we stumbled upon Lydgate Beach Park.

Lydgate Beach Park is a fantastic choice for snorkeling and swimming, especially when winter swells are keeping other beaches off-limits. It’s the ultimate beach spot for families with kids.

Unlike many others, Lydgate Beach Park offers year-round access. The park boasts two protected lagoons, shielded by lava rock walls, ensuring a safe environment for smaller kids even when other beaches have high surf. These lagoons are purposefully designed to provide a secure space for children and novice swimmers and snorkelers.

But that’s not all! The park’s highlight for the kids is the epic Kamalani Playground, covering a whopping 30,000 square feet—one of Hawaii’s largest. It guarantees hours of endless fun!

However, Lydgate Beach Park isn’t just for kids. Known for its golden beaches and turquoise waters, this picturesque location was featured in scenes from the Hollywood movie Blue Hawaii, starring Elvis Presley.

Lydgate Beach Park, located on the east side of Kauai in Wailua, just north of Kapa’a, is conveniently situated approximately 30-45 minutes from Lihue airport.

To reach this hidden gem, we followed the picturesque Kuhio Highway (Route 56), turning onto Leho Drive and then onto Nalu Road.

This stunning park is positioned right next to the mouth of the sacred Wailua River, where it elegantly meets the Pacific Ocean.

Our day was brimming with exploration at the nearby Wailua River State Park, immersing ourselves in its natural beauty. As the day wound down, we found ourselves at Lydgate Beach Park, ready to unwind and relax on the beach for a tranquil evening.located on the east side of Kauai in Wailua, just north of Kapa’a, is conveniently situated approximately 30-45 minutes from Lihue airport.

Take the Kids to the Kalamani Playground

The Kalamani Playground in Lydgate Beach Park is not just big; it’s massive, brimming with swings, slides, playhouses, mazes, and jungle gyms.

Spread across a whopping 30,000 square feet, the Kalamani playground proudly holds the title of being one of the biggest in Hawaii!

Our kids were so enchanted by the fun-filled space that we found it hard to pull them away!

For those with smaller kids, there’s the charming Kamalani Kai Bridge Playground located next to the campsites. It’s usually less crowded and offers a peaceful play area, though it’s a bit farther from the lively lagoons.

Lydgate Beach Park Swimming

Established in 1964 by Albert Morgan and Kauai County, the two swimming lagoons took center stage at the 62-acre Lydgate Beach Park. They became a haven for the community and kids, offering a secure and protected area for water activities.

The smaller keiki (children’s) pond is tailored for younger kids, while the more extensive lagoon caters to everyone else, including beginners in swimming and snorkeling. Considered one of the best Kauai swimming beaches year-round, Lydgate Beach Park owes its popularity to the artificial reef breakwaters that keep the waters in the two lagoons calm.

As winter approaches, the North Shore Kauai beaches become too perilous, and the South Shore beaches aren’t much safer. However, Lydgate Beach Park often stands as the sole Kauai beach welcoming swimmers during winter, thanks to its sheltered lagoons.

Equipped with vigilant lifeguards, Lydgate Beach Park becomes an ideal destination for vacationing families with kids. Smaller kids can enjoy a safe swim in the keiki pond, ensuring a worry-free aquatic adventure.

While the artificial lava rock walls work wonders in keeping large waves and currents at bay, creating sheltered lagoons, they don’t deter the tropical fish. I decided to join my kids for a snorkeling adventure, not expecting much due to the protective barriers.

To my surprise, I was greeted by an abundance of colorful tropical fish, including some impressive larger ones cleverly navigating through the crevices in the rock walls.

For the ultimate snorkeling experience, head to the lava rock wall on the far side of the beach – that’s where the magic happens!

Sunbath on or Stroll Along Lydgate Beach

While the lagoons may get a bit crowded, fear not! The Lydgate Beach area along the coast is extensive.

Discovering that perfect, tranquil spot for sunbathing or unwinding with a good book on these golden sands is a breeze. Plus, take advantage of the approximately 2.5-mile paved path around Lydgate Beach Park – it’s perfect for a leisurely evening stroll or a delightful bike ride.

Admire the Colorful Sunrise at Lydgate Beach Park

One of my favorite Kauai rituals was heading to Lydgate Beach Park in the early morning for a refreshing jog, accompanied by the breathtaking sunrise over the ocean! The beaches were wonderfully deserted, with only the occasional jogger, creating an ideal setting for some peaceful meditation and connecting with nature.

Oh, and a friendly reminder: never forget your camera! Some of our most cherished Lydgate Beach Park photos captured the magic of the sunrise, making those moments last a lifetime.

Stroll Down to Hauola City of Refuge

No visit to Lydgate Beach Park is truly complete without taking a leisurely stroll to the park’s easternmost point: Hauola City of Refuge!

You may already be aware that ancient Hawaiians held the Wailua River in sacred regard, evident from the numerous archaeological sites and heiaus (temples), including the Hikinaakalu Heiau, marked on the Lydgate Beach Park map above.

The Hikinaakalu Heiau was crafted by ancient Hawaiians as a homage to the sun, serving as a means to monitor sunrise for their various ceremonies.

Adjacent to the Hikinaakala Heiau, you’ll find the Hauola City of Refuge, a pu’uhonua or a sanctuary. In ancient times, Hawaiians who transgressed a kapu (taboo) sought refuge in such places, finding protection and safety even during times of war.

As self-proclaimed history enthusiasts, we were captivated by the interpretive signs that unveiled the mysteries of different artefacts and revealed hidden petroglyphs on rocks, partially concealed by the ebb and flow of tide and sands.

Unexpected Discoveries at Lydgate Beach Park

During our most recent visit to Lydgate Beach Park, we took a leisurely stroll along the sandy beaches, away from the two lagoons, and struck gold! It seems that sightings like these are becoming more common. A local couple even shared with us that they’ve spotted monk seals leisurely basking on the beach.

A word of advice: marvel at these fascinating creatures from a distance and ensure you give them plenty of space!

Surf, Windsurf & Boogie Board on Lydgate Beach

Beyond its serene beauty, Lydgate Beach is renowned for its surfing scene. Experienced surfers flock here to ride the waves outside the lagoons.

Keep an eye out for windsurfers, especially on days when the kona winds (distinct from the trade winds) blow from the southwest.

For the younger crowd, boogie boarding is a hit, particularly during the summer when the waves are more manageable. It’s a perfect blend of excitement and fun in the sun!

Other Activities at Lydgate Beach Park

Just south of the Lydgate Beach Park pools awaits a playful surprise – a tree with a rope swing. We couldn’t resist channelling our inner Tarzan for a bit of carefree fun!

For those who enjoy a unique twist to golf, Lydgate Beach Park features a disc golf course. Instead of putting balls into a hole, the challenge is to land frisbees into a basket. Our family gave it a go, and it turned out to be a blast!

If fishing is your passion, head towards the mouth of the Wailua River. You’ll find fellow anglers casting their lines, hoping to reel in an  unfamiliar tropical fish. Another fishing site is conveniently located just in front of the Kaha Lani Resort, north of the camp sites.

And if all that isn’t enough, why not unleash your creativity by crafting your own driftwood shelter on the beach? Lydgate Beach Park offers not just a scenic escape but a canvas for memorable adventures!

For smaller kids, the keiki pond is the designated area, and it’s crucial to monitor them closely.

Stay vigilant about ocean conditions at all times and never turn your back to the ocean, especially when outside the lagoons.
