When you’re in Waikiki, follow the crowd and hit the beach – because, really, why else are you there?
Waikiki Beach is worldrenowned for its powdery, golden sand and crystalclear, turquoise waters, making it one of Hawaii’s hottest spots!
But hold on, it’s not just one beach. Waikiki Beach stretches for two miles, and it’s divided into sections, each with its own vibe!
Starting from the western end, you’ve got Kahanamoku Beach right in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort.
Duke Kahanamoku Beach
Named after the legendary Hawaiian and threetime Olympic gold medalist who made surfing cool, this beach has a famous bronze statue of him on Kalakaua Avenue.
Fort DeRussy Beach
As you amble along, you’ll hit Fort DeRussy Beach and a grassy park – a more spacious part of Waikiki Beach with volleyball courts and picnic tables.
Royal Hawaiian Beach
Keep strolling east, past Gray’s Beach, and you’ll reach Royal Hawaiian Beach in front of the iconic Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
This stretch tends to be the busiest on Waikiki Beach, mainly because of all the rentals available – think catamarans, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling gear, and surfboards.

Kuhio Beach
Now, make your way to Kuhio Beach, likely the most popular part of Waikiki Beach since there are no hotels on the ocean side of Kalakaua Avenue.
With calmer waters thanks to artificial walls, this part of the beach, known as Kuhio Ponds, is perfect for beginners and kids. So, if you’re up for some sun, sand, and surf, this is the place to be!

Queen’s Beach & Sans Souci Beach
For a serene escape, make your way to the eastern end of Waikiki Beach near the Honolulu Zoo, Queen Kapiolani Garden, and the Waikiki Aquarium.
On my first vacation day, I adore kicking back in these tranquil sections of Waikiki Beach. There’s nothing better than lounging around, taking in the sights of people enjoying swimming, surfing, canoeing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and kayaking.

On our latest trip, we snagged a reservation at La Mer, Hawaii’s only AAA Five Diamond and Forbes 5 Star restaurant.
La Mer is a French restaurant with a touch of Hawaiian charm, nestled in the Halekulani Hotel, right on the beachfront, offering breathtaking ocean views.
And that’s not all – the Halekulani Hotel boasts two other fantastic restaurants: Orchids (blending contemporary American and Hawaiian flavors) and House Without a Key (offering contemporary American cuisine). Both are sure to land on any top 10 list of romantic restaurants in Waikiki.
During our last visit, we were part of a larger group keen on exploring fine dining.

I highly suggest both tours if you want to savor a taste of Hawaii’s rich multicultural culinary heritage.
The first, the Hawaii Food Tour – Off The Beaten Path, offers a threehour walking tour in a small group, exploring the local food scene through fresh markets, fruit vendors, and unfamiliar eateries.
If you have a penchant for spicy Asian dishes, this tour is a must. It takes you to Chinatown, where you’ll sample local manapua, dim sum, spiced fruit, and, of course, Hawaiianstyle poke.

The second, the Lanai Tabura curated Aloha Plate Hawaii Food Tour with Pickup, is hosted by local celebrity Lanai Tabura, the winner of Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race.
Lanai is not only a fantastic host but also incredibly knowledgeable about Hawaii’s culture and history. On this tour, we indulged in spam musubi, opihi, and malasadas.
I highly recommend both food tours, especially if you’re craving an authentic Hawaiian tasting experience. They are a delightful journey into the diverse and delicious world of Hawaiian cuisine.
6. Visit the Waikiki Aquarium

Can’t snorkel? The Waikiki Aquarium is your best option to enjoy the amazing underwater marine life of Hawaii.
Located near the Diamond Head Crater and Kapiolani Park, it’s one of the oldest in the United States, continuously adding new exhibits like the Living Reef that opened in February 2019.
The longestrunning exhibit at the Aquarium is the Edge of the Reef Exhibit, an outdoor display mimicking a Hawaiian coral reef. Expect to see yellow tangs, parrotfish, beautiful butterflyfishes, colorful coral, and red pencil urchins.
My kids loved the interactive exhibits where they could touch and feed some of the animals found in the local tide pools.
You’ll also find rare and endangered animals like the Hawaiian monk seals, the Hawaiian green sea turtles, and the chambered nautilus.
7. Watch the Fireworks at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort

One of the best things to do in Waikiki for free is to watch the weekly fireworks show at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resorts. Held every Friday night at roughly 07:45 pm, the 10minute display has been a spectacular tradition since 1988, enjoyed by both tourists and locals!
Prime viewing spots include Waikiki Beach between the Hilton Resort and Outrigger Reef, the jetty at the intersection of the Fort DeRussy Boardwalk and Halekulani Boardwalk, Ala Moana Beach Park, and Magic Island Lagoon.
Arrive at least 30 minutes early for a good location!
For a luxurious experience, consider the Friday Night Catamaran Fireworks Sail with Open Bar. It offers the best seats in the house against the magnificent Honolulu nighttime skyline from the open Pacific Ocean!
8. Take the Family to Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki, HI

Vacationing with kids on the island of Oahu? They will love a visit to the Honolulu Zoo, a surprisingly large zoo with 1,200 animals from around the world! Located a few minutes’ walk from Waikiki Beach, it covers 42 acres on royal land granted by King David Kalakaua.
The keiki, a children’s zoo, allows kids to pet friendly animals like ponies, goats, and sheep. The zoo features beautiful African pink flamingoes, lemurs from Madagascar, Komodo dragons from Indonesia, black rhinos, and Sumatran tigers.
9. Try Dance Steps at the Hula Show on Kuhio Beach

Hours: Tuesdays & Saturdays, roughly 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm (depends on the season)

For one of the best free things to do in Waikiki, attend the live hula show at the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound. Put together by Hawaii’s finest dance troupes and performers, the 1hour show features live traditional Hawaiian music and hula dances in an openair stage surrounded by palm trees and torches.
The show opens with the traditional Hawaiian blowing of a conch shell (pu kani) and the lighting of torches. The Hula Show at Kuhio Beach is more traditional and authentic compared to others.
Don’t miss the opportunity to try out some basic hula steps at the end!
10. Stroll down Kalakaua Avenue, Waikiki, Honolulu, HI
Kalakaua Avenue is the main artery that runs parallel to the Waikiki Beach coastline from the Convention Center down to the Waikiki Aquarium and Kapiolani Park. Perfect for an evening stroll, it offers a contrast from the relaxing sound of the waves to the vibrant nightlife of a modern thoroughfare!
Lined with shopping malls, restaurants, and skyscrapers, it’s a great place to peoplewatch and take in the action. One of the best free things to do in Waikiki at night!
11. Window Shop for a Therapeutic Experience
If shopping is your therapy, explore Ala Moana Center, the largest openair shopping mall globally, boasting over 300 stores and restaurants, including big names like Gucci and Chanel.
The Royal Hawaiian Center offers upscale stores with ritzy names like Ferragamo, Jimmy Choo, and Hermes. Window shopping here is one of my favorite free things to do in Waikiki!
The recently renovated International Market Place provides a tropical ambiance with a huge banyan tree in its openair food court. Waikiki Beach Walk, an openair shopping mall near the Royal Hawaiian Center, is a pleasant spot to stroll along and spend an afternoon.

12. Learn Surfing on Waikiki Beach
Envious of surfers riding the waves on Waikiki Beach? Why not learn to surf or improve your skills in the very waters where Duke Kahanamoku, the father of surfing, introduced the sport to the world?
The gentle waves on Waikiki Beach are perfect for beginners. Many outfits offer surfing lessons, and for beginners, private, semiprivate, or family lessons are highly recommended.
My teenage kids took semiprivate lessons and quickly picked up the basics. I believe it was due to the dedicated attention they received.
13. Enjoy Live Music at the Kapiolani Park1

Queen Kapi’olani Regional Park is a vast, 300acre grass park at the east end of Waikiki Beach, near the base of Diamond Head Crater, perfect for a family picnic or a morning jog.
The park features the Honolulu Zoo, the Waikiki Shell (an outdoor concert amphitheater), tennis and basketball courts, soccer and rugby fields, and even an archery range.
Enjoy a free concert with live music from the Royal Hawaiian Band every Sunday afternoon at the Kapiolani Bandstand. Don’t miss the beautiful Queen Kapi’olani Garden, especially when the flowers are in bloom.
14. Scout Waikiki Resorts for Your Next Trip
Ever wondered about that stunning sprawling pink hotel as you stroll along Waikiki Beach?
As you walk along Kalakaua Avenue or Waikiki Beach, you’ll notice some of the oldest and most historic hotels in Waikiki.
The Royal Hawaiian, known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” is a stunning hotel with its pink color and Moorish architecture. Established in 1927, it’s elegantly renovated and now part of the Sheraton chain.
The Moana Surfrider, also known as the “First Lady of Waikiki,” is a beautiful Victorian hotel that opened in 1901 and was the first hotel in Waikiki.
One of our favorite things to do in Waikiki at night was exploring resort bars for sunset maitais. Wander through resorts, old and beautifully renovated or luxurious modern skyscrapers, scouting accommodations for your next trip to Oahu!
15. Take Photos of Waikiki’s Banyan Trees for Instagram
Ever wondered about that strangelooking tree with weird roots coming down from branches?
The Indian banyan tree is a fascinating sight on many Hawaiian islands. It’s a fig tree that develops roots from branches, forming aerial prop roots that become auxiliary trunks, supporting the tree and allowing it to grow outwards.
Spot banyan trees at Kuhio Beach, the Moana Surfrider Resort Courtyard, the Honolulu Zoo, the International Market Place, and Queen’s Beach on Waikiki Beach itself.
16. Go Deep Underwater in an Atlantis Submarine
If you’re seeking a safe option to witness Hawaii’s mesmerizing underwater marine life, besides the Waikiki Aquarium, consider a 45minute ride on an Atlantis submarine.
Descend to around 100 feet, where you’ll encounter coral reefs, tropical fish, Hawaiian green sea turtles, and, if you’re fortunate, sharks and spinner dolphins!
With large view ports, the Atlantis submarine offers excellent views of the tropical marine life. A submarine tour is one of my favorite fun things to do in Waikiki with family.
17. Attend a Waikiki Luau Feast
Don’t have time to venture to the North Shore for the Toa Luau at Waimea Valley or the Alii Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center? Waikiki also hosts some amazing luaus!
A luau, a Hawaiian feast with live music and cultural dance performances, is one of the best things to do in Waikiki at night!
A traditional Hawaiian luau features dishes like kalua pua’a (slowcooked pig), poi, poke, lomi salmon, ‘opihi, and haupia. Our family loves spending at least one night at a Waikiki luau. The fiery flame dances are a big hit with our kids!

If you can’t snorkel or dive, opt for a tour on glass bottom boats. These boats take you to deeper coral reefs, offering views of spinner dolphins and humpback whales (in winter) jumping out of the water.
Equipped with magnifying glass view ports, these boats provide an amazing underwater spectacle. Spot Hawaiian green sea turtles, colorful tropical fish, and, if lucky, even reef sharks—all from the safety of your glassbottom boat!

Although Maui and its surrounding waters offer optimal whale watching, Oahu, particularly near Waikiki, is also a prime location. Many whale watching tours guarantee sightings, and we recommend booking early to utilize the guarantee if needed.
Humpback whales, weighing up to 60,000 pounds, display fascinating behaviors. The sight of a male humpback whale breaching the surface or witnessing a newly born calf is truly aweinspiring.
