Securing parking at Honolua Bay can be a bit of a challenge, especially during the bustling peak season.

A modest, 5car dirt parking lot awaits beyond mile marker 33, just past a one lane bridge. Despite our early arrival around 9:00 am, luck wasn’t on our side as the lot was already full.

In a pinch, we, like many others, opted to park along the road. If you find yourself in this situation, ensure your vehicle is entirely on the shoulder, avoiding any traffic obstruction. Navigating the parking puzzle adds a touch of adventure to your journey to the scenic Honolua Bay along the Honoapiilani Highway in west Maui, HI.

Honolua Bay Access Trail

Embarking on the Honolua Bay Access Trail is like stepping into a tropical wonderland. This trail seamlessly guides you from the small pullout parking lot to the beach, making for an approximately 1/2 mile easy hike through a lush, rainforest jungle.

As you tread the path, envision a scene straight out of a Jurassic Park movie: trees adorned with vines and moss, a towering rainforest canopy, ferns creating a green carpet along the ground, and a lush understory. The beauty is further heightened by the presence of avocado and mango trees, bearing ripe fruit—a delightful touch to your journey.

For those who chose to park closer to Honolua Farms Kitchen on Honoapiilani Highway, there’s a second, albeit longer, Honolua Bay Access Trail across from the road leading to the farmhouse. Both trails converge, leading you down to the mesmerizing Honolua Bay, and the entire trek takes a leisurely 1530 minutes. So, lace up those shoes and get ready for a nature filled adventure!

While the scenery is mesmerizing, it’s essential to note that this might not be the ideal spot for vacationing with younger kids or novice swimmers. Why? Well, there are no facilities, and no lifeguards are on duty to ensure safety.

If you happen to stop at the Honolua Bay Lookout viewpoint and spot catamarans and sailboats in the bay, get ready for an incredible snorkeling day!

While snorkeling at Honolua Bay is an option year round, the best time is usually in the summer when the water is calm, offering excellent underwater visibility. It’s worth noting a couple of things before you dive in:

 There’s no sandy beach, just large lava rocks and gravel. Make sure your footwear is suitable.

 Use the old boat ramp to enter the water, providing protection for your feet and preventing damage to the fringing coral reef.

 Be prepared to swim a fair distance to reach the outer coral reefs on your right. Consider using flippers and flotation devices for an easier journey.

Get ready to encounter common and beautiful Hawaiian tropical fish, including yellow tangs, convict tangs, butterflyfish, triggerfish (like the Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, Hawaii’s state fish), wrasses, Moorish idols, and goatfish. For those concerned about snorkeling in the ocean, many boat tours offer flotation belts and vests, making snorkeling accessible to nonswimmers. We had someone in our group who couldn’t swim but had a blast using a flotation belt—making him virtually unsinkable!

Limited to four divers, this small group tour offers a unique nighttime underwater exploration, featuring lobsters, squid, crabs, eels, nudibranchs, and octopus.
