The kick-off point for the challenging Koko Head Trail, also known as the Koko Crater Railway Trailhead, sits within the scenic Koko Head District Park. Found about a 25-minute drive east of Waikiki, this park is nestled near Hawaii Kai on the southeast side of Oahu island.
Getting There by Car
For a smooth journey, driving to the trailhead with your own or a rental car is the most straightforward option. Fire up Google Maps or your preferred navigation app and type in “Koko Head Trail” for seamless driving directions.

Fear not about parking – there’s a spacious lot at the Koko Head District Park, absolutely free for hikers. Situated near the baseball field, it’s a short stroll from there to the Koko Crater Railway trailhead. Spot the sign saying “Koko Crater Tramway” and follow the dirt path to the stairs.

Koko Head Hike Trail Information
When it comes to Oahu’s hiking scene, the Koko Head Trail reigns supreme as one of the most popular and downright challenging adventures.
Picture this: you’re tackling a whopping 1,048 steps to conquer the summit of the Koko Head Crater, a majestic volcanic cone soaring 1,200 feet above sea level. Now, these steps aren’t your ordinary stairs – they’re repurposed railroad ties from World War II, once used to transport supplies to a lookout post at the summit. Talk about a historical workout!
This trail means business – it’s steep, exposed, and shade is a rare find. So, get ready to break a sweat and put in some serious effort!
The Trail and Route
Kick-off your journey behind the baseball field at the Koko Head District Park, where you’ll find convenient parking and restrooms.
Look out for the sign marking the trail’s beginning, and from there, just follow the old railroad tracks all the way to the top.
The trail eases you in with a relatively flat and breezy start, but don’t get too comfortable – soon, you’ll hit the first of many steep sections that’ll test your mettle.
Koko Head Trail isn’t just a hike; it’s a thrilling expedition through history and nature’s challenges. Ready to lace up those boots and conquer the climb? The summit awaits!
As you ascend the Koko Head Trail, get ready for the challenge to kick it up a notch – it gets progressively steeper, with some sections bordering on almost vertical.
About halfway up, a unique hurdle awaits – a bridge section where the railroad tracks dangle over a gap with nothing beneath. It’s a test of nerves, especially if you glance down and spot the drop below. But fear not, intrepid hiker! There’s a narrow and rocky bypass trail on the right side, offering a way around the bridge if it’s not your cup of tea. Tread carefully to avoid slips or trips.
Post-bridge, the trail doesn’t let up, continuing its steep ascent until you hit the final stretch – the steepest of them all. This is where your hands and feet become valuable climbing tools, navigating uneven and worn-out steps.
Beware of strong winds at this point – hold on tight to your hat and sunglasses! But here’s the silver lining – once you conquer this final stretch, you’re in for a treat.
Welcome to the summit, where panoramic views steal the show! Feast your eyes on the east Honolulu shoreline, Hanauma Bay, Sandy Beach, Makapu’u Lighthouse, and, on a clear day, parts of Molokai. Explore the remnants of old military bunkers and pillboxes scattered around the summit.
Flat resting areas beckon, providing the perfect spots to catch your breath, indulge in a snack, capture stunning photos, and simply soak in the awe-inspiring scenery. The journey may be challenging, but the views from the top? Absolutely worth it!
What You Can See
Prepare to be swept off your feet, as the Koko Head Trail treats you to some of the most spectacular views on Oahu, especially during the enchanting moments of sunrise and sunset.
Botanical Beauty
As you start your ascent, glance down from the trail’s base to catch a glimpse of the Koko Crater Botanical Garden nestled inside. Spanning 60 acres, this garden is a living canvas featuring a diverse array of native and bizarre plants from dryland regions across the globe. Pro tip: Take a scenic drive around the crater to access the garden through another entrance.
Marine Marvels
Moving up, feast your eyes on the left side to spot the Hawaii Kai Marina and Maunalua Bay. This vibrant area is a hub for boating, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing. Keep your eyes peeled – you might even spot sea turtles or dolphins gracefully navigating the waters. Oh, and did I mention the option to drive around the crater for additional access?
Snorkeling Splendor
In the middle stretch of the trail, turn your gaze to the right to behold the iconic Hanauma Bay. Renowned as one of Oahu’s premier snorkelling spots, it invites you to immerse yourself in a vibrant underwater world teeming with colourful fish and intricate coral reefs. Don’t miss the Koko Head Arch, a natural rock formation that adds an extra touch of wonder to the crater’s side.
Surf and Sun
Climbing higher, the trail reveals Sandy Beach on your right. This hotspot is favored for surfing, bodyboarding, and sunbathing. However, a word of caution – the waves can be powerful, and the currents strong, so dip your toes with care.
Coastal Charms from Above
At the pinnacle, your gaze extends to Makapu’u Lighthouse and Makapu’u Beach on the left. Another picturesque location for hiking, whale watching (in winter), and surfing. Marvel at Kaohikaipu Island and Manana Island, also affectionately known as Rabbit Island, resting peacefully offshore.
The Koko Head Trail isn’t just a hike; it’s a visual feast of Oahu’s diverse and awe-inspiring landscapes. Ready for an adventure that takes your breath away? 🌅🏞️👀
Returning to the Trailhead
As your Koko Head Trail adventure winds down, heading back to the trailhead offers you two choices – a familiar descent or a more challenging, scenic route around the crater rim.
Option 1: The Familiar Descent
If you opt for the known path, retracing your steps down the same way you came up, exercise caution. The descent can be tricky, with steep steps demanding careful footing. Utilize your hands and feet to balance and take it slow to avoid slips or falls.
Option 2: The Scenic Challenge
For a longer, more scenic journey, take the alternative route around the crater rim. From the summit, follow the dirt path veering left. Along the way, you’ll encounter additional bunkers, pillboxes, and breathtaking views of the crater interior and the vast ocean. Brace yourself – this option is not for the faint of heart. Expect narrow sections, loose rocks, sharp drops, and robust winds. Exercise extreme caution, stay on the designated trail, and soak in the beauty without compromising safety.
Ultimately, the crater rim trail will guide you back to the bridge section of the railroad tracks, where you can seamlessly reconnect with the main trail and descend to the parking lot. Whether you choose the known path or opt for a scenic detour, safety first!
