For those journeying from Poipu, follow Highway 50, Kaumualii Highway, until you reach Lele Road. This turn comes right after crossing the Hanapepe River and the town of Eleele.

Once on Lele Road, by the Kauai Veterans Cemetery, make a right onto Lokokai Road, also known as Salt Pond Road. Continue on this road, and you’ll find yourself at the picturesque Salt Pond Beach Park.

Both species are endangered and protected by laws. Remember, give them the space they deserve. Maintain a respectful distance of at least 10 feet, allowing them to relish their well-deserved rest undisturbed!

While North Shore Kauai beaches claim fame for winter surfing, the towering waves there are often more suited for experienced or professional surfers.

Salt Pond Beach stands out as an excellent choice for surfers of all levels. However, there’s a catch – you’ll need to venture further offshore. Why? Because the waves break before reaching the natural coral reef barrier. So, whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a beginner catching your first wave, Salt Pond Beach has the surf for you!

In Kauai, salt ponds are unique to Salt Pond Beach Park, and one of the main reasons people visit this beach.

Harvesting Hawaiian salt using artificial, salt ponds is a cherished tradition here, passed down through generations.

The art of making salt remains much the same as it has for years. Normal ocean water is captured in these artificial, ponds, nestled in clay beds. As the water evaporates and the bed dries, salt crystals emerge, ready to be delicately scraped with a net and collected.

In keeping with ancient Hawaiian custom, this salt isn’t up for sale. It’s a precious resource for families, used in their cuisine and for medicinal purposes, as well as a heartfelt gift to others.

While you can observe the salt ponds from a distance, remember to be respectful of the private, protected lands. We were fortunate enough to receive an invitation from a local family for an up-close look as they tended to their section of the salt pond – an experience that added a special touch to our visit.

During our Kauai vacation, we were treated to a remarkable wildlife spectacle – a humpback whale calf breaching the waters alongside its colossal mom. It remains one of our most cherished memories, capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of nature in its purest form!

To make this experience a reality, secure a permit from the Department of Parks and Recreation. Shaded campsites await, equipped with a range of amenities, including showers, restrooms, barbecue grills, outdoor sinks, power outlets, and covered pavilions. Just a heads up – there’s no hot water.

Forget about setting an alarm; the vibrant roosters in the nearby trees took care of that, offering a lively and raucous wake-up call at dawn during our stay!

Before taking a plunge, check the weather forecasts and high surf conditions. While typically calm, there are times when high surf conditions lead to waves breaking over the natural coral reefs.

For those planning to camp or just enjoy a day at Salt Pond Beach Park, consider using bug spray or mosquito repellent. With limited shade, sunscreen is a must. Opt for reef-safe sunscreen to safeguard the delicate coral reefs.

You’ll find food trucks at the beach, offering delightful treats. During our visit, we indulged in some incredibly delicious tacos from one of these trucks. If you’re in the mood for more options, head over to nearby Hanapepe. Safety, comfort, and delicious bites – the perfect ingredients for an unforgettable day at the beach!
