Admire Turtles and Monk Seals on Salt Pond Beach

Fear not! At Salt Pond Beach, a haven of tranquility, these remarkable creatures make regular appearances. It’s a paradise for not only tourists but also turtles and endangered monk seals seeking an afternoon siesta!

Every leisurely stroll along the beach unfolds a charming sight – turtles gracefully at rest. While spotting monk seals might be a tad more challenging, we were lucky enough to witness a lone seal, engaging in playful rolls on the sand.

Both species are endangered and protected by laws. Remember, give them the space they deserve. Maintain a respectful distance of at least 10 feet, allowing them to relish their well-deserved rest undisturbed!

6. Surf Salt Pond Beach

While North Shore Kauai beaches claim fame for winter surfing, the towering waves there are often more suited for experienced or professional surfers.

Salt Pond Beach stands out as an excellent choice for surfers of all levels. However, there’s a catch – you’ll need to venture further offshore. Why? Because the waves break before reaching the natural coral reef barrier. So, whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a beginner catching your first wave, Salt Pond Beach has the surf for you!

7. Visit the Salt Ponds

In Kauai, salt ponds are unique to Salt Pond Beach Park, and one of the main reasons people visit this beach.

Harvesting Hawaiian salt using artificial, salt ponds is a cherished tradition here, passed down through generations.

The art of making salt remains much the same as it has for years. Normal ocean water is captured in these artificial, ponds, nestled in clay beds. As the water evaporates and the bed dries, salt crystals emerge, ready to be delicately scraped with a net and collected.

In keeping with ancient Hawaiian custom, this salt isn’t up for sale. It’s a precious resource for families, used in their cuisine and for medicinal purposes, as well as a heartfelt gift to others.

While you can observe the salt ponds from a distance, remember to be respectful of the private, protected lands. We were fortunate enough to receive an invitation from a local family for an up-close look as they tended to their section of the salt pond – an experience that added a special touch to our visit.

8. Whale Watching in Winter from Salt Pond Beach Park

The clear views of the Pacific Ocean waters deep into the horizon are perfect for whale watching in winter, when the migratory humpback whales return to Hawaii for breeding!

For an optimal whale-watching experience, equip yourself with a good pair of binoculars. The majestic humpback whales are usually about half a mile from shore, gracefully navigating the waters.

During our Kauai vacation, we were treated to a remarkable wildlife spectacle – a humpback whale calf breaching the waters alongside its colossal mom. It remains one of our most cherished memories, capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of nature in its purest form!

9. Kayak, Paddle Board, or Canoe Salt Pond Beach

The serene lagoons formed by the coral reefs offer a haven of sheltered, calm waters – an ideal setting for exploring kayaking, standup paddleboarding, and canoeing in the vastness of the open ocean.

While basking on the beach, we witnessed the joyous sight of young tourists embarking on a canoeing adventure across the lagoons. Their laughter and enthusiasm echoed the sheer delight of embracing the ocean waters. Feel the thrill and tranquility as you navigate the pristine waters of Salt Pond Beach through these exciting water activities!

Tips for Your Visit to Salt Pond Beach Park, Kauai

As with any beach in Kauai, safety should be your primary concern, especially if you are with smaller kids.
