Parking for Tunnels Beach can be a bit of a challenge. At the Tunnels Beach access point, nestled in a residential neighborhood, you’ll find only a handful of parking spots that fill up quickly. If you arrive by 9:00 am, you stand a good chance of snagging a spot.

Now, here’s the catch – I’ve witnessed cars squeezing in along the fences of homes, and let’s just say it’s not exactly a friendly move with the locals.

Fear not, though! The smart move for Tunnels Beach parking is to head over to the adjacent Haena Beach Park (not to be confused with Haena State Park). This local county park offers ample parking and other facilities.

Picture this: a leisurely walk along the beach from Haena Beach Park to Tunnels Beach – it’s one long, beautiful stretch that takes about 10-30 minutes, depending on where you fancy ending up.

Now, if you’re rolling deep with a crew and loads of gear, here’s a trick: drop off your squad and equipment at the Tunnels Beach Access Road parking. Then, one intrepid soul can play chauffeur, driving to park at the spacious Haena Beach Park.

I was pleasantly surprised by the array of tropical fish right at the water’s edge – schools of yellow and convict tangs, butterflyfish, Moorish idol, goatfish, wrasse, and the iconic humuhumunukunukuapua’a, Hawaii’s state fish.

2. Explore Deeper: For the seasoned snorkelers, venture towards the outer reefs. Here, you’ll find a richer diversity of tropical fish and larger species lingering in the holes. Keep an eye out for strong currents near the outer reef.

3. Diverse Conditions: The coral reefs at Tunnels Beach offer a range of conditions to match your snorkeling expertise – from gentle to more challenging.

4. Marine Encounters: Get ready for some magical moments. We spotted numerous Hawaiian green sea turtles, some even hiding in lava caves, and a playful pod of spinner dolphins that graced the reefs, swimming alongside us for a while.

But a word of caution: Keep your swim close to the shore. Kauai beaches, including Tunnels, are prone to strong currents and rip tides. Safety first! 

Laze or Sunbathe on the Golden Tunnels Beach

Stretching over approximately two miles, Tunnels Beach unveils wide, golden sandy beaches and the inviting embrace of crystal-clear, turquoise waters – a haven for those seeking a peaceful sunbathing session or some quality time with a good book.

As you wander, you’ll discover the perfect spot beneath the shade of palm trees and ironwoods lining the coast.

Picture this: On one side, lush, forested mountains cascading towards the majestic Mount Makana peak on the western horizon; on the other, the golden sands meeting the deep blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Tunnels Beach earns its reputation with multi-location shore breaks, catering to surfers of varying skill levels. For the experts seeking a challenge, the far offshore reef break promises large, towering tunnels – a surfer’s delight!

If you’re a mid-level or beginner surfer, stick closer to the beach where the shore breaks are tamer.

And it’s not just traditional surfing; I’ve witnessed the daring pursuits of wind surfers, kite surfers, and the occasional bodyboarder adding their flair to the waves at this dynamic locale! 

Scuba Dive or Sea Scooter Snorkel at Tunnels Beach

Calling all adventure enthusiasts looking for more than just snorkeling – how about diving into the world of scuba diving and free diving at Tunnels Beach?

With dive depths ranging from 25 to 70 feet, this beach provides a beginner-friendly setting for scuba diving. Prepare to explore a fascinating maze of lava tubes, tunnels, caves, and more beneath the ocean’s surface!

Local vendors, like Fathom Five, offer a range of services, including guided shore diving tours, scuba diving lessons, certification programs, and refresher courses for those already scuba-certified.

If scuba diving feels a bit too deep for your taste, consider an alternative – snorkeling with a sea scooter. This nifty device extends your range beyond traditional snorkeling.

During our visit, the teenagers in our group opted for sea scooters from Princeville – Snorkeling Shore Excursion. They had a blast exploring the coral reefs and the underwater labyrinth at Tunnels Beach! 

Kayak or Paddleboard or Canoe at Tunnels Beach

As late spring and summer bring forth calm ocean waters and expansive shallow depths, Tunnels Beach emerges as an ideal playground for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and canoeing.

Whether you opt to rent equipment from nearby Hanalei or Princeville or decide to bring your own, the options for water adventures are plenty.

During our last vacation, we turned a sunny day at Tunnels Beach into a full-family outing. The teenagers in our group had a blast with sea scooter snorkeling, while some of the adults relished a leisurely afternoon of canoeing and kayaking.

A helpful tip: Park at the Tunnels Beach Access Road to unload equipment and kids. For a day of relaxation, a couple of us drove down to secure a parking spot at Haena Beach Park. A seamless way to make the most of your water-filled day!

Tunnels Beach is a hotspot for fishing enthusiasts, and it’s not hard to see why. The reefs here offer a bountiful supply of food for tropical fish, making it a prime location for angling adventures. During our visit, we observed locals launching a fishing boat and some kids trying their hand at spearfishing. The vibrant marine life and abundant reefs make fishing an exciting and popular activity at Tunnels Beach!

Tunnels Beach may lack facilities, so be sure to pack all your essentials – food, snacks, drinks, and gear. For facilities like restrooms and showers, consider heading to Haena Beach Park, just about a half-mile stroll away.

Arrive early for convenient parking, especially on weekends when things tend to get busy. If you have the flexibility, opt for a weekday visit.

When it comes to snorkeling, choose a spot matching your skill level. Beginners and kids have plenty of options in the shallow waters close to the shore, where coral reefs offer a safer experience.

Speaking of safety, especially with smaller kids, prioritize it. Haena Beach Park with its lifeguards might be a more suitable choice.

Always check the weather forecasts and high surf conditions before taking the plunge. Remember, Tunnels Beach’s ocean waters can be rough in winter, often leading to closures for swimming and snorkeling. Pay close attention to posted signs and stay safe!
