Adore the thrilling sight of water cascading over a cliff? Well, Kauai is the ultimate spot to indulge in the spectacle, boasting thousands of incredible waterfalls, some towering up to 3,000 feet high!
Sadly, with around 90% of Kauai remaining undeveloped, reaching the best waterfalls isn’t a walk in the park. You’ll either catch a glimpse from a distant viewpoint, like Waipo’o Falls or Opaeka’a Falls, or opt for a helicopter tour for an up-close aerial view.
While some of the top-notch waterfalls are accessible, it’s not a cakewalk. A 4×4 vehicle is a must for trailheads such as the Weeping Wall or the Wai’ele’ele Blue Hole Falls. You might even find yourself kayaking to a trailhead, as in the case of the popular Secret (Uluwehi) Falls.
Even when the trailhead is reachable, expect a challenging trek, like the one leading to Hanakapi’ai Falls via the legendary Kalalau Trail from Haena State Park. However, Ho’opi’i Falls, ranking among the best Kauai waterfalls, not only offers accessibility through one of the easiest Kauai hikes but also promises a delightful family adventure.
Our little ones reveled in the jungle hike, the two stunning waterfalls, and the inviting pools at their bases – the perfect remedy to beat the heat in humid Hawaiian weather!
No surprise that Ho’opi’i Falls is a cherished local hotspot – a must-visit!

The Ho’opi’i Falls Trail is classified as easy to moderate in difficulty. Upper Ho’opi’i Falls (0.5 miles)
At around 0.3 miles into the hike, a side trail beckons, leading to the base of the Upper Ho’opi’i Falls – a notably safer route compared to the one that descends along the falls.
Opting to continue straight on the trail will lead you to the summit of the Upper Ho’opi’i Falls, and the mighty roar of the waterfall will greet you well before it comes into view.
As you approach, the Upper Ho’opi’i Falls reveals itself, surrounded by cliffs towering about 20+ feet high, offering a captivating view of the waterfall’s base.

Though, a good pair of binoculars will enhance the experience, allowing you to marvel at the beauty of common forest birds in this area, including the striking red-crested cardinal, the scaly-breasted munia, and the endemic Hawaiian honeycreeper known as the ‘apapane.

This section of the rainforest mirrors the initial stretch in its captivating beauty. Nature unfolds its wonders, making each step a visual treat!
Lower Ho’opi’i Falls (0.9 miles)
Once more, the melodious sound of the waterfall will guide your way, leading you to a fork on the trail at approximately 0.8 miles. A choice lies ahead – the right path descends to the bottom of the falls, while the left ascends to the top.
Opting for the right path unveils the enchanting plunge pool at the base of the waterfall – a perfect spot for kids to splash around. Of course, exercise caution, check the water flow, and ensure safety at all times.
On one side of the stream, a delightful surprise awaits – a rope swing, inviting you and your kids to channel your inner Tarzan. It’s a playful addition to the natural beauty, promising fun moments by the water’s edge. Enjoy the adventure, swing away, and make some cherished memories!

Tips for Hiking the Ho’opi’i Falls Trail
Hoopii Falls Trail conditions can be quite variable. During our visit, the trail remained relatively mud-free except for the area near the falls. However, I’ve heard that after rains, it can get muddy and slippery. It’s advisable to equip yourself with good hiking shoes and poles, especially during such conditions. If you can waterproof your shoes, it’ll add an extra layer of convenience for the hike along the stream and the falls.
While the natural canopy of rainforest trees provides ample shade, the typical hot and humid weather in the area demands you bring plenty of water. Consider waterproofing your shoes for a more comfortable hike, especially along the stream and near the falls.
Given the windward side location of Kauai, a light rain poncho is a prudent addition to your gear. Be prepared for the occasional rain shower.
Don’t forget the bug spray and mosquito repellent! Mosquitoes can be quite present on the trail and near the falls, so liberal application of repellent will keep you comfortable.
Lastly, as a courtesy to the residents, keep in mind that the Ho’opi’i Falls trailhead and sections of the trail are adjacent to residential areas. Lower your voices, as sound travels easily in these parts, and maintain the cleanliness of the trail and its surroundings. It’s a shared space, so let’s ensure everyone can enjoy it to the fullest!
