The trailhead, off Kuamoo Road (Highway 580), is well-marked. Pass through a wooden gate onto a mud trail entering the rainforest jungle.

Rainforest Jungle Path

The initial part of the Kuilau Trail is a lush rainforest jungle with sporadic views, mainly to the left. The muddy path intersects the Kuilau ridge multiple times, offering fabulous views along the way.

Views and Vegetation

While the early trail may lack expansive views, it immerses you in a Jurassic Park-like setting with towering trees and lush greenery. Expect muddy shoes but enjoy the lively birdlife.

As you ascend, the trail unveils wide views on the left, potentially showcasing Mount Wai’ale’ale in clear weather.

Kuilau Trail Picnic Area (1 mile marker)

Approximately a mile in, discover a picnic spot with tables and benches under shelter. This is a popular spot with a grassy clearing, possibly the highest point of the hike. Nearby Ohi’a forest features striking red flowers.

Best Kuilau Hike Viewpoint

At the picnic area, encounter a junction with a spur trail continuing forward. Take this trail (left-hand trail) to reach the ridge summit viewpoint. Marvel at panoramic views of mountain ranges covered in lush vegetation – a perfect Jurassic Park setting in the heart of Hawaiian tropical rainforests!

Waterfall on the Kuilau Hike (1.5 miles)

Take a hard right at the picnic tables to continue on the Kuilau Ridge Trail. While this section doesn’t offer immediate views, the tropical rainforest scenery is captivating.

The trail becomes narrower and more overgrown with tall grass and ferns. If hiking with smaller kids or older people,, consider turning back at the picnic tables.

Around half a mile past the picnic area, discover a charming 15-foot waterfall, partly obscured. During the rainy season, the flow is impressive, but be aware that it might dry out at times.

Wooden Bridge at the End of Kuilau Hike (1.8 miles)

The trail continues through the rainforest with a slight descent and a 180-degree switchback. Approximately 10-20 minutes past the picnic tables, reach the end of the Kuilau Trail at a wooden bridge over the Opaeka’a Stream.

Feel free to continue onto the Moelepe Trail, although the views are not as spectacular. On our journey, we explored a bit before turning back.

Return to the Kuilau Ridge Trailhead

The return trip to the trailhead is straightforward and quicker as it mostly descends. To clean muddy shoes, walk along the road, past the bend, to the stream just further up.
